Santa Eulària Takes Action: Beach Showers Closed Amid Drought Alert

Amid a pre-alert situation of drought declared by the Water Resources Directorate of the Balearic Islands Government, the Santa Eulària des Riu City Council has swiftly implemented measures under the Municipal Pre-Alert Plan. The aim is to enhance public awareness and reduce water consumption across the municipality.

Beach Showers Shut and Foot Washes Limited

The city council has made the decision to close beach showers while also imposing restrictions on the usage hours of foot washes, limiting their availability from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This move is aligned with the larger strategy of water conservation in response to the prevailing water scarcity.

Irrigation Adjustments and Awareness Campaigns

To manage water consumption more effectively, the municipal authorities have made adjustments to irrigation practices in gardens with higher water usage. Furthermore, a targeted campaign has been initiated to raise awareness and encourage responsible water use among significant consumers.

Monica Madrid, the Councilor for the Environment, stressed the significance of these small yet impactful measures, highlighting their crucial role in the immediate future of the island. She emphasized the need to convey the importance of water for the environment, especially during times of scarcity.

According to Madrid, some misuse of water in showers was observed, which prompted the closure of showers. However, the decision to retain foot washes was made as they have a lesser impact and suffice for quick cleanups before returning home or to accommodations. Additionally, keeping sediment on the beach is beneficial for the environment.

Madrid noted that the Municipal Water Service dispatched communication to major water consumers, explaining the island-wide drought pre-alert situation and suggesting corrective actions to curb excessive water use.

Moreover, the service has imposed a daily consumption limit for these major consumers. Once this limit is surpassed, the flow of water supplied to them will be reduced.

Adhering to Hydrological and Drought Plans

Santa Eulària’s actions align with the Balearic Hydrological Plan 2022-27, specifically Article 50, which encourages public entities to progressively replace showers with footbaths. These measures are part of the comprehensive strategy outlined in the Special Plan for Alert and Drought within the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu.

The council’s proactive approach underscores the shared responsibility in conserving water resources during times of heightened environmental challenges.
