Drugs in Ibiza: A Fight to the Finish
Ibiza, a paradise in the Mediterranean, is renowned for its vibrant nightlife and pristine beaches. Yet beneath its sun-soaked exterior lies a clandestine battle against drugs. The recent takedown of a major cocaine network unveils the island’s relentless effort to combat drug trafficking.
An Elaborate Cocaine Network Exposed
The operation unfolded in four meticulous phases, culminating in the arrest of 72 individuals. The most recent phase led to the apprehension of 33 people in Barcelona and 29 in Palma, adding to the ten arrests made earlier in the investigation.
Drugs’ Dark Path: Smuggling Cocaine into Paradise
A criminal organization that orchestrated the wholesale distribution of cocaine across the Balearic Islands was dismantled. This illicit network connected Catalonia to Ibiza, Mallorca, and Menorca, transporting cocaine via delivery trucks to the ports of Palma and Alcudia. Astonishingly, they introduced 10 kilograms of cocaine into these islands every week.
Unveiling the Network: A Summer’s Investigation
The investigation commenced in Palma in the early summer of 2022, triggered by the detection of three Dominican brothers overseeing cocaine trafficking in Palma’s Gomila neighborhood. Months of covert work uncovered the mastermind behind the operation, responsible for acquiring substantial quantities of cocaine. This kingpin supplied three criminal clans residing in Palma’s Son Banya shantytown – the “Clan del Ove,” “Clan del Pipi,” and “Clan del Cabrero.”
Driving the Cocaine Trade: An Organized Syndicate
This investigation disclosed a highly organized criminal organization that had operated for six years. Comprising more than a dozen truck drivers, they were smuggling 10 kilograms of cocaine into Mallorca, Ibiza, and Menorca every week. The network’s leaders managed the distribution of cocaine between Colombian and Dominican networks across various Catalan cities.
The Art of Deception: Cocaine in Plain Sight
To camouflage the illicit cargo, the organization concealed the drugs among legal shipments carried by unsuspecting truckers. These drivers, oblivious to the narcotics concealed within their cargo, would transport the drugs to the Balearic Islands and return to Barcelona with the drug proceeds.
Ironclad Secrecy: A Cocaine Operation’s Inner Workings
Operating with strict internal discipline and unwavering secrecy, the criminal organization had a clearly defined hierarchy and assigned roles for its members. Even the truck drivers, unwitting participants in this illicit trade, operated under the guise of legitimate transport companies.
Operation Dismantling: A Massive Cocaine Haul
The combined efforts of the National Police and Civil Guard yielded impressive results. Three cocaine processing and transformation labs were dismantled. These facilities contained the necessary machinery and held 485 kilograms of cocaine paste, mixed with fruit pulp. An additional 1,100 liters of various liquids infused with cocaine were seized, with an estimated total weight of around 1,100 kilograms once separated.
Tightening the Net: Cocaine’s Global Route
The investigation revealed more than four independent supply lines, originating from South America and introduced via the freight ports of Valencia and Barcelona. Surveilling these tractor-trailer operators unveiled over a dozen criminal groups that had previously eluded detection regarding their cocaine shipments to the Balearic Islands.
High Stakes and High Living: Leaders of the Cocaine Trade
Leaders of the criminal organization enjoyed extravagant lives, marked by luxury cars and opulent residences, thanks to their substantial financial gains. Each truck driver involved earned an additional 2,000 euros weekly. Notably, some South American groups within the organization had connections with Galician and French drug traffickers.
With this operation, the largest cocaine-introducing criminal organization to date was dismantled, resulting in the most substantial seizure of cocaine. The success of this operation was only possible through the collaboration of five investigative units of the National Police and Civil Guard based in Mallorca and Barcelona, who dedicated themselves exclusively to this investigation for a year and a half, navigating the ever-evolving landscape of drivers, trucks, and the security measures adopted by those under investigation. Ibiza, a symbol of paradise, continues to stand firm in its battle against drugs.
