Teatro Pereyra Reopens its Doors Next Month
Excitement buzzes through the air in Ibiza as the iconic Teatro Pereyra gears up for its grand reopening scheduled for April. The venue, adorned with the same rich colors that embellished the original theater—deep burgundies and lustrous golds—promises to be a spectacle of cultural renaissance. Mayor Rafa Triguero recently shared glimpses of the ongoing renovations during his visit, describing it as the “rebirth” of a space that will soon regain its status as a magical venue defining the city.
The property owners, overseeing the project with the Himar company, express optimism about the timely progress of the works, aiming for completion by the first quarter of 2024. Their goal is to have Teatro Pereyra in full swing by April, coinciding with its 125th anniversary. Pedro Matutes, spokesperson for the owners, shares insights into the current stage of the project, highlighting the placement of pavements and ongoing interior decoration efforts. The owners aspire to revive the original image of Teatro Pereyra, meticulously recreating its distinctive burgundy and gold color scheme.
A Labor of Love and Restoration
A detailed study of the original pigmentation guided the restoration process, ensuring an authentic recreation of the historic theater. Matutes reflects on the commitment to preserving the essence of Teatro Pereyra, stating, “Our obsession has always been to recreate something as close as possible to what already existed, updating aspects like scenography and decor. The Pereyra was a gem, and the colors remain the same. We are thrilled with the results, and reopening fills us with excitement.”
Matutes likens the months of work to a marathon, emphasizing that the final stretch is upon them. “Certainly, we will celebrate a special event in April because it’s the 125th anniversary, and from May onwards, Nacho Cano’s musical could take center stage,” he adds.
A Family’s Contribution to Ibiza’s History
The owning family takes pride in framing the project as a “recovery of part of Ibiza’s history,” marking the highest private investment in heritage restoration on the island, possibly across the Balearic Islands. While Matutes refrains from disclosing specific costs, he underscores the rarity of historical theaters being restored without public funding.
Teatro Pereyra first opened its doors on April 6, 1899, and its extensive refurbishment began months ago under the stewardship of the local construction company Himar.
Looking to the Future: Program and Direction
If all goes as planned, Teatro Pereyra is poised to unveil a summer program dominated by musical theater, with a diverse lineup for the winter season, blending cultural and recreational events. The Group Sirenis, led by the versatile Nacho Cano in artistic direction, will spearhead the venue’s management, promising a varied and high-quality artistic program for residents and visitors alike. The intention is to revive traditional uses of the establishment, recapturing its historical significance.
In the heart of Ibiza, Teatro Pereyra stands ready to reclaim its role as a cultural beacon, promising a revival that harmonizes history, celebration, and artistic expression. Stay tuned for the grand reopening in April, marking not just a milestone in the theater’s journey but also a significant chapter in Ibiza’s cultural resurgence.
